Welcome to the course blog! I am truly excited about teaching this course, and I hope that you find it to be an enlightening and enjoyable educational experience. This blog serves as a mechanism for everyone to process ideas and concepts related to our class and to learn through engagement with others. Since none of us is as smart as all of us, we can gain further insights by taking in the ideas of our learning community members. While we may disagree on here, it is essential that we always demonstrate respect and maintain an open mind.
In order to participate, you will need to have an active Google or gmail account. You can obtain a free account by going to either website and signing up. Once you have accomplished that task, return to this page and click on the heading "Welcome to the Blog -- Topic 1" above. If you scroll down, you can read my instructions and enter your comments in the box. Come back a little while later, click on the same link, and read your colleagues' posts. It would also be great if everyone could at least publish their photo in the "Followers" section on the right-hand side of the page. That way, we can learn each other's names and connect faces with ideas.
I will post a blog topic occasionally during the term and will inform you when a new cycle has been initiated. For each topic, I would like for you to produce a 1-2 paragraph thoughtful comment that shows your honest reflections and includes some type of contribution to our understanding of the issues at hand. (I will hand out examples of a good blog in class.) Then, after reading the posts of your classmates, I'd like for you to jump back into the conversation -- either by critically responding to someone else or by adding to your previous post with further insights. Feel free to continue the dialogue if you wish. You will be graded on the value-added nature of your overall posts over the course of the term. Although I am certain that you will get the hang of this blog thing soon, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

My thoughts and feelings about taking a course in Statistics varies.I feel this way because it is my first Statistics course ,so I do not know what to expect other than from what I have heard from other students. So I guess you can say the fear of the unknown. My plan is to go in the course open minded and in a postive way.Just simply do the best I can!The main thing the instructor can do to best help me achieve success in this class is just make this course interesting and fun at the same time. The instructor also have to be organized and well prepared just as he would want from his students.Good luck everyone!=)
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to expect taking this course because I haven't take it before. But I hope it will be a good education class for me. This is my last year in college and i'm trying to have a good year so I can graduate this year. Some students told me that this class is hard and others told me it is easy but everybody said to take it with Dr. Greenfield. I will try my best to make it successful for me.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts about taking statistics course is that it is something that I want to learn and hopefully excel in. Before I take any course my eyes are always open for the possibility of success in that course and taking statistics isnt any different. People say that taking a statistics course is tough but i ready to take the course and decide for myself if statistics is as tough as they say.The professor and my fellow classmates can help me achieve success in statstics by keeping the class intresting and particpating and everybody having a open mind about what they can accomplish in this course. I look forward to this course and achieving my goals in this course and again I have a open mind about the possibilities of statistics. With a mind ready to learn anything is possible and that goes for statistics class as will.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts and feelings about taking a course in Statistics is that Im scared to take the course becasue it seems hard and have alot of work and mathematics thats go along with it. Im not that good in math but im just trying to keep a positive mind about taking this class and not make it seem as hard as I think it is, because it may not be.I might end up loving this class and I look forward to finding out what it is all about. One thing that my instructor and classmates can do to best help me to achieve success in this class is to provide help when he or she see's me struggling with the work and help me understand it better. On the brighter side, I can say that I look forward to this class and hope that it is easier than it sounds!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first heard about statistic classes most people frightened me because they made it seem like a horrible class. After hearing these stories I am not content with taking this class. However, everyone experience with the classes are different. I will try to keep this thought in the back of my mind and keep my mind open to this class things. One request that I ask of my teacher or classmates to do is help me when they see that certain topics is hindering from understanding the work. Within the same breathe I will also do the same for them. All in all I will try to make this the best experiences because there is no negativity in my book.
ReplyDeleteElementary Statistics is going to be some what of a challenge to me because I don't like math or anything dealing with numbers period. with Dr. Greenfield as the proffessor I think he will make the class interesting and easy to understand.
ReplyDeleteDr.G, you made me feel a bit better about this class after our meeting on Friday. I feel that I will get alot out of the class because I usually do when I take one of your classes.
ReplyDeleteI'm not good at Math, but you said it want be too bad. I feel that I will come out of course inspired like always.
I honestly have nothing but good feelings about coming into this class. I try not to come into any class scared, worried, or with doubts. I know that I have to take this class for my major so there is no room to fail. I cant wait to start learning more about statistics and how it works. I know that will be an interesting semester filled with good things and lots of learning. I also feel that everyone should take this course because I feel it can be benefical to all majors.
ReplyDeleteI believe statistics is a great experience for college student to take. It gives you the opportunity to better yourself about facts that goes on in today's society. If gives us a chance to have fun learning how statistics works when dealing in relationships.
ReplyDeleteMr. Robinson I like the way you think. Your positive attutide is what so many students lack. Going into any situation with a positive attitude can make the difference between you passing or failing.
ReplyDeleteYou also stated that with your classmate and professors help you can make it. I actually think alot of students forget about their fellow classmates when it comes to getting help with class. So I like the fact that you mentioned both the professor and your classmates.
At first I will admit I was nervous about taking statistics due to the fact that I have never been good at any math related classes. But I heard that this class is actually quite fun and that I will learn a lot by doing taking this class. I know even though I am nowhere being good at any type of math I know that I will give it my best shot and work hard to try and get a grasp of this concept.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first signed up for the class I just thought of it as a class I had to take to graduate. All I knew was it had something to do with numbers but I didn't know what the class really had to offer. So I did a little research on the subject and ask around to see what other people had to say. I received more negative feed back then positive, that made me a little nervous to take the course. So I decided to come to the class with a open mind ready to learn new things. Being in your class I'm getting the feeling it might not be as bad as I thought it would be, I just have to stay focused and do my work.
ReplyDeleteEntering this class I know that I will gain a lot of useful information that will help me better understand the fundamentals of statistics. I have learned that there are many ways to gather stats, but the data will not be incorrect or off if you do not plug in the data the correct way. So taking this class will be very interesting for me I am looking forward on learning and working with the different techniques of finding statistics. My classmates and I can work together by sharing and going over information that we have learned to make sure each and every one of us fully understands the concepts of statistics
ReplyDeleteEntering into elementary statistics I had a feeling of uncertainty. I have heard some good and bad stories surrounding the subject. With all the talk around it I still came into the class with an open mind ready to jump into it. It is interesting to know the vital role that statistic play in everyday life. In statistics things as simple as a batting average in baseball to things as complex as the divorce rates affect how people perceive things. It is also interesting how there can be many views (or stories) in a statically analysis.
ReplyDeleteI honestly didn’t know what to expect in this course. I have taken an economic class back in high school which a lot of statistics was done. Monday being my first day of the class I actually enjoyed it. When finding out the different ways things are statistically put together was really interesting. It brought many ideas in my mind that I would like to research like teen age pregnancy, African American men majoring in business and why? One way the instructor can help me achieve my success is by keeping the class interested and live. “Keep the party going” is a little saying I like to use

ReplyDeleteMy friend told me that statistics were going to be hard, but so far i have enjoyed the things we discussed in class. Exspecially how statistics showed the rate of young blacks men are fasle. So I have been wondering what esle is not correct. So I will enjoy finding out.
Initially when I joined the course, I was a bit nervous because math has always been my weakness in school. However, after attending class, I realized there is more to statistics than just numbers, and that we will also explore the logic behind it. I look foward to the knowledge I will gain from this course, and really appreciate that the professor (Dr. Greenfield)is so lively and able to make it an enjoyable 50 minutes while learning. So...see you guys in class tommorow. :)
ReplyDeleteMy initial thoughts about elementary statistics was that it was going to take me forever to graduate because it is required and I was sure that I was going to fail miserably at it. After these first few class sessions, things are beginning to clear up a little bit and my hope has been lifted simply because Dr. Greenfield makes the class enjoyable not only with his antics but the way he teaches. Luckily, he's not a monotonous professor so I don't have an urge to fall asleep during our 50 minutes.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I was scared to take this course because I did hear stories about the class itslef. But things changed when I started taking Dr. Greenfield class because he showed another light behind Elementary Stats. He makes it fun to learn about stats. I like that stlye of teaching. Now I have a good feeling about passing this class understanding how to use stats and how to use it in m everyday life. Thanks Dr. GGreenfield
ReplyDeleteI was told this course was hard, however after the first couple of days I'm convinced it is not as difficult as I thought. I look forward to having a GREAT semester!

ReplyDeleteMy initial thoughts were that the class was going to be another Shaw class to me, meaning it was goin to challenge me at all. I don't run across many classes here that make me actually think outside the box or do research. I hope that this class will change that part. Aside from that i don't expect much, only the worst but hope for the best. Its the way of the world. Look forward to the outcome.
I had no particular reaction to signing up for this course. I didn't exactly know what to expect, but I took a course with Dr G last year, and was pleased, so that much "excited" me. The teaching methods used in his previous course seemed to motivate me to do my best, so I pretty much expect the same again this semester.
ReplyDeleteI didnt know anything about statistics until this summer with helping my mother with this class. I noticed it is not an easy course if you dont have an instructor in front of you. But now that im in statistics i feel that it might be a little better because we are not jus sitting there doing problems, we are actually having fun with it so i know i will do my best.
ReplyDeleteTHIS COURSE IS GOING TO BE CHALLENGING FOR ME FOR THE MERE FACT THAT I DO NOT LIKE MATH; BUT I TRUST MY PROFESSOR TO ENHANCE MY KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THIS CLASS.
ReplyDeletewell this stats klass is gonna be a lil interesting this semester, i have heard a kouple of stories about the klass, now i just have to see which ones are true and which ones arent... But mean if its n e thing that is reall just dealing with basically math, i will dofine, i actually like math... but as usual, i kan see that DG is going to make this klass seem just a lil bit harder than it usually is.. lol
ReplyDeleteI agreee with Miss. Carter. The professors is there to help. I myself seem to forget that and kinda freak out when I do not understand something. The thing that I thought was a good start in this class, is the day we worked on the worksheet in groups and Dr. G said to make sure everyone in the group understands. Everyone worked together. I feel if your sucessful why wouldn't you everyone else aound you to be successful. In the past I have had classmates that help me and I helped them.
ReplyDeleteI am felling better about this class, then I did the first day. I think I will be ok.
i have taken this course once before and i hated it..i had n african teacher teacher and it was late at nite ..but now that i have dr geenfeild i think the course is so much better plus the class isnt late at nite i first thought that it was all about math but now i see it in a different perspective...
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jalisa. I feel the same way she feels, but at the end of the day I do have to come in with an open mind because everybody experience is different. What I mean when I say that is everybody may or may not have heard stories about statistics but its up to the next person who is taking the class to be the judge for themselves.
ReplyDeletei agree with shani that this class will be very interesting but i still have to say that me and math do not mix

ReplyDeleteI gree with shani that math is not one of my favorite courses but i still believe the professor will make this not what we all think or heard it to be.
ReplyDeleteWell Miss Carter, you also have a postive outlook on the course that we are taking the course. When you go into something thinking that you will do good, than 9 out of ten times you do so you will be fine.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what shani said. After actually taking the class for about a week now I feel more content about being in the statistics class. If the class keeps going the way its going then I will be more happy and content in the class.
ReplyDeleteDoreatha Mctell, What is the percentage of do wake county expelled black boys vs. white boys
ReplyDeleteMatthew Mitchell, i feel like this is a very essential class that will be very beneficial in your financial future
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rudy. Ive heard rumors about how good Dr.G was and how helpful he was to his students, which lead me to registering for his class knowning that I would get all that I can from it.I would also like to say that after talking to someone that has taken statistics and did very well at it, that I have grown a interest in it and grown out of my fear for it. I was told that its mostly all about standard deviation, mean, median and mode and if you have tht down packed, along with the understanding of graphs and percentages, I could and will do well with no doubt.
