Topic 2 for Monday

As mentioned in class today, I would like for students to think of a topic that they might be interested in researching in this class. Don't worry -- it's not official right now, just a chance to start exploring it. Frame the issue in terms of a research question. For example:

Let's say that you wanted to know about students' attitudes about interracial dating. Maybe your research question would be:

Do students at smaller schools have different attitudes about interracial dating than those who attend larger schools? (There are tons of different possibilities and not one right answers.) You could survey students at Shaw and Meredith (small schools) and NCCU and NCSU (large schools) and compare the results.

For the blog post, mention your research question and some ideas about how you might want to study the topic. Feel free to respond to one another and provide feedback. (Please complete the blog by Monday.)

  1. I would like to measure the respect level of students for adults at HBCU's

I would do surveys questions. One of the questions could be as follows on a giving day how many times do you curse in front of an adult?

I would also observe students. I would go to some local HBCU's and watch how the students treat the adults. For example see if they hold the door or watch their mouths. I would then go to other local colleges and do the same.

  2. i would like to check the likely hood of students to find a job in there career after graduation.

my research question can be set up by interviewing seniors from different schools and ask them wht steps are they taking to find a job in there major. i can also ask people who graduated the year prior and see how many of them found jobs dealing with there major.

I WOULD HAVE TO CHECK THE HOSPITAL INSURANCE POLICY

WHAT KIND OF INSURANCE THE PATIENT CARRIES

    THE HEALTH BACKGROUND

  5. In my research,I would like to gather nformation about what political issues are most important to college students in the Raleigh area.

To find out this information for my research, I will use surveys that list political issues of today (ie. health care) to find out which issues matter the most to area college students.

  6. I think the idea of finding out hospital insurance policy research is a good idea. Being able to know if a hospital will take patient with know insurance or depending on carrier is something to really look at.

  7. I also like the idea of seeing how hospital turn away patients depending on their health insurance coverage. I do like the aproach Shan'ni use to gather the info. I would have to suggest that you also do surveys to patients. Maybe asking them questions like have they always been turn away or was this there first time.

  8. I would like to do a study on if female students tend to study more or less than male students....I will do a survey asking each gender if they study and if so how long do they study.

I also would like to know if learning in a classroom setting is more effective than learning in a online class?

On another note I think Dante research question will be a great study.

  9. I want to know why the school system has come up with children need to have a Booster shot before they enter in the 6th grade. Why now? Why this age? What is this about because they haven't done this before. Don't children have enough vaccines before they reach this agree. The school system has said that children cannot attend classes if they do not receive this shot. I would like to know how the parents feel about this and what other states are doing this.
I think Sha'ni has raised an interesting question. I go to the doctor alot and sometimes I feel like I'm not always receiving the best care that I should because I have Medicare. It's not like private insurance, because they don't cover a great deal of things. Enough of that, but this is a good topic.

  13. Are dogs really a man's best friend? Do Woman like dogs more than men or is it the other way around? I always wondered about that. I would probably conduct this research by asking woman and men if they like dogs. I would probably do this survey at a mall where I could get a variety of answers from a variety of people.

  14. Commenting on William's post it would be interesting to find out what political issues are most important to college students in the Raleigh area. Being that college students are young adults and the future it would be nice to know what concerns them in terms of the policies that need to be changed or put into place.

  15. A research topic that I would like to find data about is,

Are public schools more affective than private schools, or are private schools more affective than public school?

I would find my data and results by surveying and observation.I would take previous researchs and compare them to new research. I would do the same for surveys done by individuals who were asked this question who either attending a public or private school along with results from parents.

  16. I would like to do my research on how many college students that are attending colleges actually go to school because they have a passion for their life career vs. college students that do not want to disappoint their family i.e. NCCU, Shaw, NC State UNC, Peace college, Meredith. I would like to find out how many students are attending college because their motivated and absolutely sure of their life career vs. Students that only attended college so they don’t disappoint their family, I would give out surveys and evaluate 10 students two per campus.

I would give each person a 25 question survey to find their student life and extra curriculum activities. I would evaluate each student’s passion for their career. Furthermore I would analyze and filter through data so that I could begin to come to a conclusion.

  18. I have alot of things in minds things that i question everyday. One main thing I would like to do a survey on is why african americans boys grow up thinking of becoming professional athlets from the ages 13-18, and why is sports the main focus of their lives.
Another study I would like to do is to see if theirs anything different in the education in HBCU's and regular schools. ex. compare Meredith, Peace, Shaw, and St. Augustines since their all right around each other ask the students a survey what they are learning, and see the advantages, and disadvantages.

I WOULD GO ABOUT THIS BY DOING ABOUT TWO TO FOUR INTERVIEWS WITH MEN AND BOYS WHO ARE STILL LIVING IN THE HOUSE HOLD AND THEN THE MEN NOT LIVING IN THE HOUSE HOLD TO SEE IF THE TRAITS HAS CARRIED OVER INTO THERE OWN NORMAL HOUSE HOLD OR IF THEY PASSED THESE TRAITS TO THERE KIDS.BUT FIRST ILL GIVE THEM A SURVEY TO SEE WHAT THERE TRAITS ARE AND COMPARE THEM TO THE NORMAL FEMALE TRAITS OR WHAT A TIPICAL FEMALE DAY WOULD START OFF AS...

  21. How many male upper classman and lower classmen students at Shaw prefer plus size women verses petite women?

I would collect data by surveying the upper class males verses the under class males and see what they prefer. I would start of by asking the males if there peers have any influence on the females that they choose to date.

  22. Jamilia

That would be an interesting topic to know about, because some students think that they don’t have to take birth control because pregnancy would never happen to them.

  24. I would like to find some research on how many animals are killed by humans today. I feel that animals should not be killed or put in a situation were they have to kill other animals just to stay alive. I beleive that their will be a lot of data that would help me solve this problem

  28. I would like to talk about the double standard that exists in US immigration policies. The treatment between Haitians and Cubans when they arrive to the United States and how it differs greatly. For example when Cubans reach the U.S. they are racketed through immigration and within a short period of time are released to their family. The American experience for Haitians is the contrary. The treatment is unfair,it affects many people, and may be possible to solve. This situation has at many times divided the community of Miami. This is a local and state problem and being from Miami it makes it my problem.

  31. I like the research the Jamilia is doing. It seems like the pregnancy rate is getting higher and higher each year. I would be interesting if you also look at the rate of how many pergnancy happen each year from different age groups and if they are not using birth control, then what is the other prevention of pregnancy they are using.

  32. I think it would be interesting to research how minority students at a private HBCU feel about their courses vs those at a public HBCU. and then compare those to those enrolled at non HBCUs. For some reason I think the education level would be a difference in each of these types of schools. On the other hand, maybe the education level is the same and its the teaching thats different. Overall, I'd like to know how those with degrees from HBCUs fare agaist those with degrees from non HBCUs... and see how those working toward their degrees feel.
